FAQ

Once you’ve decided to have painting work completed, it’s best to move forward with finding a contractor as soon as possible. Just know that availability changes seasonally with summer being the busiest time and winter being the slowest time. Many solid contractors are booked out for weeks if not months in advance.

To more fully answer this question, we need to first explore the seasonality of painting.

In the Greater Cincinnati area, there are essentially two seasons: 1. Exterior Focus or Summer and 2. Interior Focus or Winter.

  1. Exterior/Summer Season: During this time, many painting companies focus primarily on completing exterior projects for customers. This ranges from pressure washing to complete two coat color changes. This period generally ranges from May to October with the extreme ends being less predictable weather-wise.
  2. Interior/Winter Season: During this period, painting companies must work indoors. The weather outside is usually too cold for proper paint adhesion on any exterior projects. This season runs from November/December through March.

April is the wild card here in Cincinnati. The weather is so unpredictable for this month that we often cannot rely on scheduling exterior work. Interior work takes precedence, and exterior work is fit in as appropriate.

There are a variety of factors that can affect the pricing of a painting project. The key factor being prep work. This can range anywhere from minimal repairs, such as a few spots of caulking, to scraping the entire outside of a home. The more perfect you wish the walls and trim to look, the more expensive the job will typically be.

Expect a range between $600-1000 a day per person for labor costs. Paint costs depend on type of paint used and area needing coverage. A standard gallon of interior paint covers about 350 sqft, while the same gallon of exterior paint will cover about 150 sqft.

What all is included in this cost? These costs include: paying the laborers for prep work and painting, paying for time doing administrative work, paying for liability insurance, workers comp, and unemployment, gas, equipment storage and transportation, etc. There is a lot of overhead running a proper painting company. Be wary of very cheap bids as those painters often don’t have insurance coverage which is not only a liability for the laborers but most importantly is a liability for you as a client.

Let’s look at a hypothetical example. Say you need your entire exterior painted. You live in a two story house where the painters need to use tall ladders to reach the top of the painted surface. You hire a guy who gave you a super low bid. He and his crew get to work, things are looking good. Then one day, Johnny, in his effort to set up a tall extension ladder, loses control and the ladder falls over landing squarely on your car parked in the driveway. Johnny doesn’t have insurance. Next thing you know, Johnny packs up all his gear and you never hear from him again. He probably doesn’t even have a Google listing where you can post a bad review. Now your car is messed up, you have a half painted house, and someone else may fall victim to a similar fate.

Be very careful of who you hire and please make sure they are fully insured so that if an accident happens, they have the means to make it right.
